The era of the local creamery was integral to the development of the rural Western Canadian identity.
Restored to a 1932 model, the Historic Markerville Creamery stimulates the senses and engages people of
all ages. Guided tours bring to life the story of the creamery complete with an impressive collection of
pasteurizers, a butter churn, a steam engine, and a cream truck. After the tour, have some Icelandic fare
at the Kaffistofa and look around the Pint Size Gift Shop for unique Markerville souvenirs.
Owned and operated by the Stephan G. Stephansson Icelandic Society, the Historic Markerville Creamery is
located 30 km (half hour) southwest of Red Deer and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. All other times
by appointment. Admission is $2.00 for adults, $1.50 for youths (7-17) and seniors (65+), and $5.00 for
families.
Central to the community, the Creamery was often the focal point of the community's social activities.
"Cream Day" on the second Sunday in August recreates this through old-time demonstrations of ice cream and
butter making, a petting zoo, children's activities and entertainment. Admission is free. As well, various
school programs including the "Hola School" program are available to both school and summer camp groups
from May to August. Bus tours are welcome to spend the day in and around Markerville with a served lunch
and many things to see and do.
